Much like the remainder of Collin County, Richardson was settled by arrivals from Tennessee and Kentucky in the early 1800.  They wanted a better life with the promise of free land to settle in and farm. Richardson was named in honor of the train contractor who built the lines running from Dallas to Denton in the mid 1800’s. 

  

In the early 1900, The Interurban (electric railway) provided Richardson access to Denison, Waco, Corsicana and Fort Worth. Richardson continued to grow especially after World War II.  Richardson’s history is replete with rapid expansion of basic services like a fire department, police as well as retail and soon business followed.  Central Expressway heralded yet another reason for business to consider Richardson home.  In 1956, Texas Instruments made its headquarters in Richardson.    

Growth continued in the 1970’s is evident from the fact that 40% of Richardson home were built prior to 1980.  After this period of time, Richardson witnessed an incredible push by business to occupy space and do business here. Residential growth boomed through the 1970s. Forty percent of the homes in Richardson were built between 1970 and 1979. While housing development declined during the 1980s, the City’s commercial development continued to increase. Commercial activity peaked in 1984, with commercial site plan approvals exceeding 5 million square feet. Residential and commercial development peaked in the 1980s, but both have continued to grow steadily

Today the City is no longer the bedroom community of the ’50s and ’60s, but is itself at the heart of a significant employment center, the Telecom Corridor© area. More than 88,000 people work in the City of Richardson each day.  Richardson is one of the most conveniently located communities in the Metroplex, with access to points in all directions via both major roadways and the DART rail system. Richardson’s planners devoted much time to perfecting a great balance by providing many entertainment venues such as the highly acclaimed Eisemann Center for Performing Arts in 2002.

-Richardson is home to the Cottonwood Arts Festival which is a nationally recognized festival featuring fine arts and great food

-Standard and Poor’s and Moody’s recognized Richardson for strong financial management and economic stability

-Richardson is comprised of 28 square miles

-About 5,000 business make Richardson home

-Richardson was named Best Place to live by Money Magazine in 2006

-Morgan Quitno 14th Annual America’s Safest cities awarded Richardson as 69th safest cities in the U.S.

-Richardson was ranked the 4th Best Place to live in Texas by Money Magazine

-Business Week ranked Richardson 2nd. As one of the Best Places to Raise Kids in 2009
